A delicious breakfast that is enjoyed and relished in my house every weekend. Upma is usually made with semolina or suji, but this variation made with vermicelli has a addition if nutritious veggies and is really tasty too. Potatoes, carrots, cauliflowers and green peas cooked with silky vermicelli and an aromatic tempering. You can have Vermicelli upma using 15 ingredients and 15 steps. Here is how you cook that.
Ingredients of Vermicelli upma
- You need of oil.
- Prepare of dry mustard.
- It's of chana daal.
- Prepare of urad daal.
- You need of asafoetida.
- It's of turmeric powder.
- Prepare of chopped onion.
- Prepare of chopped green chilly.
- Prepare of grated ginger.
- You need of chopped tomatoes.
- You need of water.
- Prepare of chopped coriander leaves.
- You need of salt to taste.
- You need of vermicelli.
- It's of cashew.
A basic semiya upma is made without any vegetables. But to make it a balanced meal, I sometimes add mix vegetables like carrot, peas and beans. This Semiya Upma is a traditional South Indian breakfast. Made with vermicelli and vegetables, this upma is mildly spiced, and an easy one-pot recipe.
Vermicelli upma step by step
- Heat 1 tsp of the Oil in a pan on medium heat..
- Once the Oil is hot, roast the Vermicelli till it turns light golden, stir continuously..
- Once done, remove to another pan to stop the cooking process. Keep aside..
- In the same pan, add the remaining Oil and heat on medium heat..
- Once hot, add in Mustard Seeds and allow them to pop..
- Add in Channa Daal and Peanuts and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add in the Urad Daal and the Broken Cashew and cook until they turn golden brown.
- Add in the Turmeric Powder and Mix well..
- Add in the Onions, Carrots & Peas, green Chillies and Ginger and Cook till the Onions turn translucent..
- Add in Salt and Water, cover the pan and allow the Water to come to a boil..
- Once it is boiling, open cover and add in the roasted vermicelli.
- Give it a really good mix, lower heat, cover and cook for 6 minutes..
- Stir inbetween once..
- After 10 minutes, turn the flame off and allow it to sit covered for another 5 minutes..
- Open, fluff gently, garnish with Coriander leaves and serve hot..
